The village is famed for its honey-coloured Elizabethan architecture and its five stone bridges across the River Windrush, all of which has earned it the byname ‘Venice in the Cotswolds’. A few minutes’ walk from the busy hub of shops and restaurants and only half an hour’s drive from the city of Cheltenham, The Mousetrap Inn is a favourite retreat for the local community as well as for holidaymakers.
The mid-19th century Victorian property has been carefully restored, preserving period features such as the exposed beam ceilings, stonework walls and open Cotswold stone fireplace. The inn offers 11 recently renovated en suite rooms, and fine traditional food from it spacious restaurant and outdoor dining terrace. The focus on quality and comfort has gained this highly desirable inn a 3-diamond rating from the English Tourist Board, in addition to excellent visitor reviews.
Nicholas Calfe, Director – Hospitality South at Christie & Co, who handled the sale, comments, “The Mousetrap Inn represented an excellent turnkey opportunity, having received ongoing investment by the previous owner, Mike Gascoyne, who has done a fantastic job at creating a go-to venue in the heart of the Cotswolds. Having sold the venue to Mike back in 2007, it was a delight to bring it to the market on his behalf all these years later and achieve a successful sale.”
The Inn has been purchased by Stephen Davies, who comments, “My partner and I are thrilled to have acquired The Mousetrap Inn and will strive to maintain and enhance its high standards of food, service and accommodation. Having spent two decades working on the development side of the Hospitality industry, we have always aspired to owning & operating something so special. It has taken a long time to find the right business, but the character & history of the Mousetrap had us charmed from the outset. Despite the ongoing financial & resourcing pressures, which are felt very sharply by the Hospitality sector, we are fully committed to the long-term success of the Inn.”
Assistant Manager Michelle Beesley adds, “As a team, our main priority is working together with the Bourton-on-the-Water community, using locally sourced food and products, and making this the favourite haunt of local people as well as tourists.”
The Mousetrap Inn was sold for an undisclosed price.
